District 9 - march 4th 2010

I caught this amazing film over the weekend. Yes, a tremendous story, told with real urgency and panache, and at times painfully cruel to watch, but oh the creatures were impressive. Even though I have flirted with CG, the integration of these characters into some kinetic steadycam was jaw dropping. You really can't see the joins anymore. The way the live action characters interract is astonishing. This film is probably the most convincing case for CG that I have seen, especially with the detailed performances from the character. Utterly credible, and I just accepted what I was watching. And the effects served the film. A superb movie, and one that I was grateful was not in smell-o-vision. I might mentally store some of the movement of those characters in the back of my head....you never know when it might come in useful. Maybe soon.
