Romeo and Juliet

From the Garrick Theatre, London, a live screening, 7.7.2016

In haste but this was very interesting. A live screening of Kenneth Branagh's production - set in the chic Italy of the 1950's, giving a rather La Dolce Vita feel, at least in the first act. The second act seemed to forgot that concept and played it very straight indeed. As a concept it was a bit loose really, but did prompt the idea that the screening would be projected in black and white, and wide screen and with film style credits. A lot of that worked with beautiful chiaroscuro lighting and shadowy figures watching, but the stage set was not designed, obviously, for widescreen and the cinema projection ended up with lots of headless bodies behind the main focus of attention, and the friends I was with, perhaps not sued to black and white, felt very distanced from the piece. Some great ideas, but all a bit straight, and very short on fights and sex.
