Not my favourite musical, and certainly not my favourite score, with some real dud songs (Masculine Toast is a truly hideous song, and such a weak transposition of a brilliant scene in the French original), but I went out of some strange loyalty. A surprisingly good set, this being a Bill Kenwright production who is not know for lavish productions. Where the show did look threadbare was in the amount of people on stage. Only six Cagelles, but they were beautifully dressed. John partridge as Albin/Zaza looked great and sang beautifully but played Albin as Vera Duckworth high on laughing gas - a very misjudged decision that undermined everything, but heck he could sing, and milked every note of I am what I am. I sort of enjoyed the show, knowing it is important, but still not warming to it really. Give me Kander and ebb or Sondheim any day......Jerry Herman I find rather empty.
