The York Realist

The Crucible, Sheffield, 31st March

This is a truly beautiful, tender play, with obvious comparisons to God's Own Country, but with a bit of the York Mystery play running quietly underneath. Delicate, moving, and yes very little happened, but what a pleasure to spend time with such lovely people. After hating the characters on stage in Jerusalem last week, these characters were certainly flawed but warm, and I cared so much for them, desperately wanting the main couple to stay together, to find a way. Staged in probably too large a theatre, I was however, in the room with them. A love story within a clearly drawn family and a painful predicament. a heartbreaking couple of hours.
